The Canucks have recently announced the signing of Cory Schneider to a 2 year deal. Many of the critical in Canuckville have wondered aloud, what is this guy still doing here? With Roberto Luongo tied up for the rest of our lifetime and refusing to allow his coach to let the backup get more than 15 starts per season, why haven’t we already dealt this guy? He’s a first round pick with great AHL numbers; there must a market for him. On that basis, you’d certainly think so. But we all know that goalies are a different breed and it seems that forecasting their success at the NHL level is nearly impossible.
With the Canucks’ recent signing of Mason Raymond (to a contract that would appear to be under market), they find themselves handsomely over the cap limit for the coming season, having committed more $, cap wise, than
wholesale jersey any other team. At first blush, it might seem like Mike Gillis has himself hamstrung at this point. But clearly credit is due to old baggy eyes so far. Scanning the salary commitments, you don’t see any outrageous deals (pending the play of
baseball jersey free shipping recently acquired Manny Maholtra, Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard). In fact, you see a number of deals with core players that appear under market. So it would seem that Gillis is spending as much of the Aquilinis’ money as possible AND spending it wisely.
All that said, being over the cap limit (even after excluding the
National Post injured Sami Salo) and having, on average, 6 more players under contract for next season than the average team, you can bet there will be more player movement before the season begins.
The biggest news in Canuckland these days (besides another injury to a top defenseman) is the coming and going of players between Vancouver and Manitoba. With Sami Salo slated to make his long awaited return tomorrow night against Calgary, Aaron Volpatti and Cody Hodgson find themselves Moose bound while grinding forward Victor Oreskovich joins Salo in the move to the big club.
Putting aside for a moment the result of tonight’s
nike jersey game, despite having already won three games this series, Vancouver played their best game yet and seemed to snatch back momentum from the surging Hawks.
Cory Schneider starting between the pipes was a huge surprise
nhl jerseys cheap (though suggested here) and with Roberto Luongo nowhere in sight on the bench, a most intriguing story. And while communication breakdowns between Schneider and his defense resulted directly in two Hawks’ goals, Schneider was blessed with a much stronger team effort in front of him than Luongo had recently seen. The story got even more intriguing when Luongo magically
amazon.com appeared from the dressing room to replace the crampy Schneider. Who’s scripting this stuff anyway?
There has been a fair bit of discussion going on regarding shot quality the past few weeks among the hockey stats nuts. It started with this article about defense independent goalie rating (DIGR) in the wall street journal and several others have chimed in on the discussion so it is my turn.
